The SUV D-Segment’s New Contender – The Mahindra Scorpio-N
Mahindra has always been known for its tough utilitarian vehicles. Developed for the military and ruggedness came before modern good looks. Over time the rougher edges have been smoothed out, but the original DNA remained very much visible.
Since then the marque has designed some very handsome SUVs aimed squarely at the urban market. The Mahindra XUV500 and XUV300 and the KUV100 would look perfectly at home in the fanciest mall or driveway of the most expensive house. The Scorpio SUV walked a different path. It is a rugged SUV that can take on the toughest terrain, yet it can operate in the city too.
So that covers all the bases SUV-wise for Mahindra? Actually, no. Get ready for the Big Daddy of Mahindra SUVs – the all-new Scorpio-N. Some might think the Scorpio-N is just the Scorpio with some extra bits and bobs bolted on. Some will be wrong.
Although successful car makers carry the underlying DNA throughout all the vehicles they build, and although the Scorpio-N channels the spirit of the original Mahindra Scorpio, the N is an entirely new car designed from the ground up.
It will redefine the D-segment SUV category and has been specifically engineered to meet the aspirations of the young and young at heart tech-savvy drivers looking for an authentic full-size SUV.
The Scorpio-N will be built on a brand new body-on-frame platform, so it is the real off-road deal whether you take the 4×2 or 4×4 option. You can also choose a powerful petrol or diesel drive and manual or automatic transmission.
The Scorpio-N is a car you can go to war in. Or on a date.
You see, the days of tough 4x4s being as rugged inside as out are over. The Scorpio-N gives you a commanding driving position. Its premium interior is loaded with the advanced luxury and safety features you have come to expect from a top-range SUV. The ride is firm, yet comfortable. The ergonomic cabin makes driving a pleasure.
The Mahindra Scorpio-N sets a new SUV standard. But what about the current Scorpio? The one we know and love? Is it dead? No, the Scorpio-N is a totally different car that moves in an entirely different market. The current Scorpio will continue to do what it does so well, but with a badge that says Scorpio Classic.
The Scorpio-N is due to launch in India by the end of June. We don’t know if we are going to get it, but you can keep up by subscribing to our newsletter.
