Mahindra Taps Into German Technology

Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. (M&M) has signed the first supply agreement to source components of Volkswagen’s MEB (platform) for its upcoming range of INGLO electric SUVs. Under this landmark agreement, the Indian carmaker is set to become the inaugural external beneficiary of Volkswagen’s innovative unified cell technology, signifying a major step forward in the companies’ joint e-mobility endeavours.

This development is a significant step in supporting Mahindra’s ambitious plans to introduce five all-electric SUV models based on the newly developed purpose-built electric platform INGLO. The initial launch is slated for December 2024. In a joint press release, the companies revealed that the supply agreement will last for several years and is expected to involve a total volume of approximately 50 GWh throughout its duration.

Mahindra’s Aggressive Posturing On The Electric Front

With a concerted focus on advancing electrification efforts, the collaboration further builds on the foundation laid with a partnering agreement and a term sheet signed in 2022. For Mahindra, leveraging Volkswagen’s advanced electric components will equip its INGLO SUVs with cutting-edge battery technology, ensuring competitive range, performance, and safety.

While exact details of the batteries remain undisclosed, indications suggest they are likely to be lithium-ion phosphate (LFP) batteries. LFP batteries come with notable benefits, such as enhanced stability, extended lifespan, and quicker charging capabilities when compared to nickel-cobalt-manganese (NCM) counterparts. This aligns with Mahindra’s focus on offering robust and reliable electric vehicles that align with the needs of the modern, lifestyle-oriented eco-conscious customer.

Furthermore, this collaboration sets the stage for potential future joint ventures and co-development projects, potentially fast-tracking Mahindra’s advancements in the broader electric vehicle (EV) ecosystem on a global scale.

As the launch of the first INGLO SUV approaches, the success of this collaboration will be under keen observation. Even beyond this, it’s interesting to witness Mahindra’s emergence as a pivotal player in the electric mobility revolution, driving innovation and shaping the future of sustainable transportation.
